Parks Bond Blog  08/20/2009
Two out of three ain't bad, but three out of three makes the prospects for Marietta's upcoming $25 million parks bond referendum mighty bleak.

Mayor Blog  05/28/2009
Marietta Mayor Bill Dunaway and Ward 5 Councilman Anthony Coleman have often feuded during their nearly eight years in office together, but their differences reached new levels at the council's May 13 meeting at which the two got into a yelling match about whether to schedule a parks bond referendum on this fall's ballot.

Justice?   05/07/2009
President Obama is expected to unveil his nominee shortly to succeed Justice David Souter on the U.S. Supreme Court. Based on Obama's comments thus far, he seems likely to nominate a justice who favors "the little guy," as opposed to a justice who would merely interpret the law as it is written. That is, he seems inclined to nominate someone who would be comfortable "making law from the bench," as opposed to just ruling on the legality of laws passed by legislative bodies.

Dog in the Fight?   04/30/2009
Should members of a new committee tasked with making a recommendation to the Cobb school board for or against use of the "3-2-1" Standards-Based Report Cards consist of those who do not have children in the county's schools? Folks who, to quote school board member David Banks of east Cobb, "don't have a dog in the fight"?

Assessments   04/02/2009
Assessment appeals by Cobb property owners are up by 400 percent this spring over a typical year, thanks to the economy. Meanwhile, the Cobb Board of Tax Assessors appears reluctant to order a blanket rollback of property values across the county, arguing that some properties are continuing to increase in value despite the recession. What do you think? Do you think your property has risen in value in the past year or so? Do you think the county should implement a blanket rollback in assessments? And if that means a reduction in revenue to the county, what would you suggest to offset that reduction?

Snow and School  03/02/2009
Cobb and Marietta school children headed off to school Monday – grumpily. Many hoped school would be cancelled following Sunday’s snowfall, which blanketed most of the county with more than an inch of the white stuff. Many of Cobb’s neighbors cancelled school on Monday, and there were icy patches here and there on local roads Monday morning. Do you think school administrators made the right decision in opening on schedule?

The Super's Contract   01/23/2009
The Cobb school board unexpectedly voted on Thursday evening to give controversial Superintendent Fred Sanderson a contract extension. The length of the extension, and any change in his compensation, are yet to be determined. The past six months or so have been particularly tumultuous for the board thanks to the promotion/demotion of North Cobb High Principal Dr. Lawrence Bynum, the vote on SPLOST III, the contract for school board attorney Brock Clay and the SPLOST management contracts. Meanwhile, the system is still on the Needs Improvement List under No Child Left Behind.

Nichols blog   12/15/2008
If anyone deserved the death penalty, it was Brian Nichols. All he did, after all, was cold-bloodedly murder a Fulton County judge, a court reporter, a sheriff's deputy and a federal agent. Yet three jurors in his death penalty trial refused to even take part in the jury deliberations, according to other jurors, and the hung jury that resulted meant that Nichols essentially ended up with a sentence of life without parole.

Facility Group blog   11/20/2008
Should the Cobb school board continue doing business with The Facility Group?
